EFCC arrests woman in Gombe over Naira Abuse

In a recent crackdown on currency abuse, the Gombe Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended a woman identified as Janty Emmanuel.

Her arrest on Monday, May 20, 2024, comes in response to allegations of abusing the Nigerian currency, specifically the Naira.

The arrest followed actionable intelligence that reported her involvement in spraying Naira notes during a social event.

Investigators presented a video to Emmanuel, showing her at a well-known event venue, G-Connect in Tumfure, Gombe State. The footage depicted her exuberantly dancing while spraying Naira notes, predominantly of the N1000 denomination.

This visual evidence left little room for denial, and Emmanuel admitted to the offense during her interrogation.

She will be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

Currency spraying, a traditional act of throwing money in the air and letting it fall on individuals, usually in celebratory contexts such as weddings or parties, is seen as a mark of honor and joy.

However, it is also considered an abuse of the currency, leading to its degradation and potential unavailability for regular economic activities. This practice is explicitly prohibited under Section 21 of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which criminalizes the spraying or matching of the Naira, an offense punishable by law.
