On May 4th, 2023, the Nigeria in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) announced the arrival of the first batch of Nigerian evacuees from war-torn Sudan.
The flight carrying an estimated 376 evacuees landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja at about 11:40pm local time. The flight departed from Aswan Airport in Egypt and some of the evacuees arrived via Air Peace.
The evacuation exercise was necessary due to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has forced many Nigerians living in the country to flee for safety. According to NiDCOM, 376 stranded Nigerians were at the airport in Egypt earlier on Wednesday, waiting for airlift to Nigeria.
NiDCOM has been actively involved in the repatriation of Nigerian citizens stranded in various parts of the world due to the various emergencies. The commission has been working closely with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other relevant agencies to ensure the safe return of Nigerians to their home country.
Upon arrival at the airport in Abuja, the evacuees were received by officials from NiDCOM, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and other government agencies. They were screened for COVID-19 and other health conditions before being transported to designated isolation centers for mandatory quarantine.
NiDCOM has assured Nigerians that the government is committed to the safety and well-being of its citizens, both at home and abroad. The commission has also urged Nigerians living in countries experiencing crisis or conflict to register with the Nigerian embassy or consulate in their host country for timely information and assistance in case of emergencies.
The evacuation of Nigerians from war-torn Sudan is a testament to the government’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens. The successful repatriation of the evacuees is a collaborative effort between various government agencies and private organizations, including Air Peace, which provided air transportation for some of the evacuees.
As the conflict in Sudan continues, the Nigerian government will continue to monitor the situation and take necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens living in the country.
The government will also continue to work with the international community to find a lasting solution to the crisis in Sudan and other countries facing similar challenges.
