Enugu Govt. hunts formal commissioner of land who resigned over corrupt practices

A federal high court sitting in Enugu, on Friday remanded a former Enugu State Commissioner for lands, Victor Nnam in prison custody over alleged land scam committed as commissioner in the state.

Surveyor Nnam was arraigned before Honorable Justice I. N. Buba of the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Enugu by the state government.

Some of the charges against Nnam includes land racketeering and fraud at the popular Centenary estate Enugu as well as obtaining the land of Obeagu/Amechi Awkunanaw people through false pretence and with intent to defraud

The presiding judge who gave him an option of N200m fine and a landed property at the Zoo estate in Enugu for his bail condition later remanded him at the Enugu prisons pending when he would meet with the bail condition.

It would be recalled that the former commissioner resigned from his position after the operatives of the EFCC launched investigations into his activities at the ministry following multiple petitions it received from the ministry officials.

Recall, Matters Arising earlier reported that, Enugu State Commissioner for lands and Urban Development Doctor, Surveyor Victor Chukwuemeka Nnam has resigned his position as the Honorable Commissioner for Lands in Enugu state.

Surveyor Victor Chukwuemeka was appointed by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in 2019 has tendered his resignation letter following the alleged sacking of performing officials in his ministry by the state Governor Lawrence Ifeanyi Ugwanyi.

The Commissioner in his resignation letter dated 29th October 2021 which he personally signed, thanked Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of the state for giving him the opportunity to serve the good people of Enugu.

He however cited the recent removal of the professional heads of department under him as reason for his resignation.

Surveyor Victor Chukwuemeka noted that his “conscience will no longer allow him to continue to serve the current administration while those innocent professional senior civil servants are punished for doing the right thing”

He maintained that he accepted the appointment in 2019 with hope that he was going to be allowed to bring on board World Best Practice in land administration which made him to immediately proposed for the establishment of a GIS land administration system so that the Ministry would stamp out land grabbers and creat investors’confidence in the land system, but the proposal was rejected without explanation till date.

“I hereby resign my appointment as the Commissioner for lands and Urban Development, Enugu State with effect from today, Friday 29th of October 2021, and submit the black Prado SUV with plate number IENSG 5712 to your office.

“Thank you, your Excellency for giving me the opportunity to serve the good people of Enugu State”. Chief Dr. Victor Nnam added that his resignation letter has been received by the office of the Governor.
