Ikeja Train-BRT Bus Collision could’ve been prevented if there was Railway Crossing Barriers - Report
In recent times, there has been an increased concern about the safety of rail transportation in Lagos, Nigeria. This concern was reinforced by a tragic incident that occurred on Thursday, 9th of March 2023, when a train collided with a BRT bus in Ikeja, Lagos.

Unfortunately, the accident resulted in fatalities and severe injuries, further highlighting the critical need for safety measures in railway transportation.

Following the incident, a report showed that over 95% of railway lines that intersect with vehicle paths in Lagos lack essential railway crossing barriers. These barriers play a crucial role in preventing accidents by preventing vehicles from crossing the railway line when a train is approaching.

However, the lack of these safety measures remains a significant concern, as it poses a threat to the safety of commuters and the general public.

It is unfortunate that the absence of safety measures on railway crossings has resulted in many fatalities in the past. The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has reported several cases of accidents caused by collisions between trains and vehicles or pedestrians. It is, therefore, essential that the government takes proactive measures to ensure that necessary safety infrastructure is installed in railway transportation systems across the country.

One of the most crucial safety measures is the installation of railway crossing barriers. These barriers act as a physical obstruction to vehicles, preventing them from crossing the railway line while a train is approaching. The barriers provide enough warning time to allow vehicles and pedestrians to clear the railway line before the train arrives.

The importance of installing these barriers cannot be overemphasized. If there was a railway crossing barrier at the intersection where the tragic incident occurred in Ikeja, Lagos, it could have been prevented. The installation of these barriers across Lagos and other parts of the country would significantly reduce the risk of accidents on railway crossings, thereby promoting the safety of commuters and the public.

The government must take a proactive approach to address the safety concerns in railway transportation. The installation of necessary safety infrastructure should be prioritized to ensure that rail transportation is safe and reliable. Also, education and awareness campaigns can be implemented to educate the public on the dangers of ignoring safety measures on railway crossings.
