The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the tragic news of the beheading of the Chairman of the Ideato North Local Government Area of the state, Chris Ohizu. The sad event was carried out by suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its affiliate, Eastern Security Network (ESN).
According to reports, Ohizu was kidnapped on Friday, along with two others, from his country home in Imoko community. The LG boss was then killed after his kidnappers reportedly received a ransom of ₦6m.
The news of the abduction and murder spread quickly and soon the video of Ohizu’s execution went viral on social media. The video showed Ohizu kneeling and his hands tied while undergoing an inhuman act before he was killed.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the police in the state, Henry Okoye, issued a statement on Monday. The statement read in part, “The Imo State Police Command is aware of the iniquitous and obscene video that has gone viral on social media where a man, suspected to be the abducted Ideato North LGA Chairman, was seen kneeling and his hands tied while undergoing inhuman act.
He was subsequently killed by suspected members of the Proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra and its armed affiliate, Eastern Security Network.”
The police spokesman also mentioned that an investigation had begun into the abduction and murder of the victim. He noted that the command was already on the trail of the hoodlums before the “obscene video” surfaced on the Internet. He then urged the public to assist the police with credible information and report any clandestine activities or suspicious person(s) to the nearest police station.
The tragic incident has sparked widespread condemnation and calls for justice. The beheading of Ohizu is an unspeakable act of violence and a violation of human rights. The police must do everything in their power to bring the perpetrators to justice. The government must also take steps to protect its citizens and ensure that similar incidents do not happen again in the future.
It is important to mention that this is not the first time that IPOB and its affiliate ESN have been linked to such violent acts. The group, which is seeking independence for the people of Biafra, has been designated as a terrorist organization by the Nigerian government. The group has been accused of carrying out several attacks on the military and police in the region, as well as kidnappings for ransom.
