The Nigerian political landscape is plagued by many issues, one of which is the infamous Obidient trap that poses a grave threat to the unity and stability of the country. This trap ensnares the youth, particularly the Yoruba, who are prone to believing the deceitful narrative propagated by the IPOB who metamorphose to obidient.
Prior to the 2023 general election campaign, many average Igbo individuals regarded the controversial leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) as their savior. IPOB has a history of engaging in castigations and inciting violence both within and outside Nigeria, which is why it was banned by the Nigerian government. However, the narrative shifted when Peter Obi secured the Presidential ticket for the Labour Party.
Peter Obi, a former Governor of Anambra State, quickly gained the support of the IPOB people, who saw him as a beacon of hope for their cause. Within six weeks of his nomination as the Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi embarked on a world tour and met with the leadership of the proscribed IPOB, who were hiding in a foreign countries. He reached an undisclosed agreement them, which raised many eyebrows and caused widespread speculation.
Throughout the months of campaign no single agitator’s protest recorded either on social media none within or outside Nigeria, no castigation and the inciting speeches were very minimal.
Reports indicate that during the election campaign, the average Igbo person was made to believe that if Peter Obi won the presidential election, he would declare the state of Biafra.
The Igbo, who have been agitating for the creation of an independent Biafran state, were thrilled at the prospect of having their dreams realized. Unfortunately, many Nigerian youths, especially those from the Yoruba tribe, fell prey to the deceitful narrative propagated by the IPOB.
Regrettably, a significant number of Nigerian youths are not independent thinkers, and they are easily influenced by false narratives and propaganda. They believed that Peter Obi would bring about a new Nigeria, without realizing the gravity of the situation. The IPOB trap, which promises to deliver a state of Biafra for the Igbo people, almost consumed Nigeria and threatened the country’s unity and stability.
It is important to note that Nigeria is a multi-ethnic country, and every tribe must work together to achieve progress and development. The Igbo trap, which seeks to divide the country along ethnic lines, is not only dangerous but also unacceptable. The Nigerian government must take action to prevent such narratives from spreading and ensure that the country remains united.
