On Sunday, January 29, 2023, a tragic accident occurred in Ojuelegba, Surulere Lagos, Nigeria. A truck conveying a 20ft container landed on a commercial bus, resulting in the deaths of nine individuals: four adult males, three adult females, one boy child and one girl child.
The bus was reportedly picking up passengers when the truck lost control and fell over the side of the bridge.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) was quickly alerted and responded to the scene. According to the Permanent Secretary (PS) of LASEMA, Dr. Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency used a forklift to suspend the container load and cut off the top of the bus with light rescue equipment. This effort led to the rescue of one adult female, who was extricated alive and taken to the trauma center for medical attention.
The LASEMA team, along with other emergency responders such as the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Federal Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and Nigeria Police, worked tirelessly to control the situation. The heavy-duty Goliath, teams from Onipan and Cappa, and several ambulances were also on the ground to assist.
The incident has prompted further investigations by the Nigeria Police to determine the cause of the accident, specifically the removal of the barriers on the bridge aimed at preventing trucks from ascending.
This tragic accident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for stricter regulations to prevent similar incidents in the future. The thoughts and prayers of the community are with the families and loved ones of the victims.
