On Monday, Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, appealed to Chris Ngige, the Minister of Labour and Employment, to intervene and prevent the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) from carrying out their planned protest scheduled for Wednesday due to the current cash scarcity in the country.
The NLC had mobilized its affiliate unions and State Councils to shut down the offices of the apex bank nationwide.
During a closed-door meeting at the Ministry of Labour and Employment in Abuja, Emefiele stated that the protest would impede the progress of the apex bank if it proceeded. The President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, and other labour leaders were present, while the Minister presided over the meeting.
According to an anonymous official who attended the meeting, Emefiele assured those present that commercial banks would receive adequate cash from the CBN’s vault. He also mentioned that the CBN had instructed commercial banks to operate during weekends to ease the issue of cash crunch.
Emefiele emphasized that the protest would disrupt a lot of things in the bank, hence the need to heed the Minister’s call, who is a chief conciliator.
