The army’s throughout the world salute is done with the palms facing outward, facing the person being saluted. What this means is to show that they are not carrying any weapons and that they are friendly so you can trust them.
Also in the Air Force salutes with their palms at 45 degrees to the ground showing progress towards the skies. This is to signifies the take off of an aircraft.
While in the Navy, a salute is executed with the palm facing the ground at a 90 degree angle to the forehead. The reason behind this is to hide the hands of sailors that get dirty due to oil or grease stains while working on the ship and not to disrespect their superiors.
