Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has denied allegations that he blamed President Muhammadu Buhari for the recent fuel scarcity and shortcomings in the naira redesign policy.
Bayo Onanuga, the Director of Media & Publicity for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, stated that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and “some individuals” were attempting to inflict pain on Nigerians for political gain.
Onanuga explained that Tinubu was only highlighting the sabotage being carried out by some individuals within the system and working with the PDP. He emphasized that Tinubu, as a presidential candidate, cares about the suffering of the people and has a duty to warn the government of the sabotage being carried out against their efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians.
It is important to note that the fuel scarcity and naira redesign policy have been major issues in the country, causing much hardship for the citizens. The fuel scarcity has led to long queues at petrol stations and the naira redesign policy has caused difficulties for citizens trying to access new notes from banks.
The PDP and “fifth columnists” have been accused of attempting to use these issues to inflict pain on Nigerians for their own political gain. Onanuga stated that the PDP, in cahoots with these individuals, are trying to create a narrative that the APC-led government is responsible for these problems in order to harm the chances of Tinubu and the APC in the upcoming presidential elections.
However, Onanuga emphasized that Tinubu and the APC are aware of the efforts being made by President Buhari to address these issues. For example, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) officials, including Governor Godwin Emefiele, have stated that enough new naira notes have been supplied to the banks, yet many citizens are still unable to access them. Similarly, President Buhari has formed a 14-man panel to address the fuel scarcity, yet the queues and agony continue.
Onanuga stated that Tinubu, as a presidential candidate who cares about the suffering of the people, has a duty to warn the government of the sabotage being carried out against their efforts to improve the lives of Nigerians. He added that Tinubu’s warnings about the sabotage being carried out against the government’s efforts were made during an APC campaign rally at Abeokuta on Wednesday.
