Nigerian police in northwestern Zamfara State have arrested four people on suspicion of eating and selling human organs, a rare occurrence in the state.
At a press conference in Gusau, Zamfara State capital on Thursday, the commissioner of police, Ayuba Elkana, said the suspects were arrested after security operatives found a body in a ruin, with no body parts. not.
The discovery is part of an ongoing investigation into the disappearance of a nine-year-old boy.
Four suspects have been arrested since last week, including two male and two female males, according to CP Elkana.
He added that members of the group, who are accused of cannibalism, were being sought.
The commissioner of police also said that so far investigations have shown that the leader of the group has twice sent N500,000 to the victims for human trafficking.
Eating and selling human organs is a new phenomenon in Zamfara, despite the state’s notoriety of killings and kidnappings for ransom from militants for years.
And the Nigerian authorities are being criticized for failing to address the situation in the state.
In a related development, CP Ayuba Elkana said security operatives rescued 17 people abducted from Niger State and taken to Zamfara.
He added that during a patrol, police recovered weapons including a rocket-propelled grenade launcher, after losing to gunmen in a forest in the area.
